Just a reminder: Tomorrow is my DJ debut. Alongside my bro, Mike, I'll be spinning electro, house, disco, new wave, and dubstep at 592 Queen West in Toronto at a lounge called Tota (formerly the Q Bar). We're opening the night so come early, we're only on from 8pm until 10 pm!
For more info check the facebook page here.
You can hear a brief mix we made on our Myspace.
In anticipation of tomorrow I've posted a couple of mp3s I'm definately looking forward to dropping tomorrow night! check them out below and don't forget to COME PARTY WITH US TOMORROW EVENING!

Van She - Techno Music (Van She Tech Remix)

Meroz - Your Lover (Galactik Knights Remix)

I Love It.

I really love that french house sound. The muffled funk bass, the open and close of the high hats - perfectly synchronized disco drumming, that one vocal hook looped for an eternity, and all of that filtered and compressed to perfection.
Leonardus has been somewhat prolific lately, at least by his standards, and I think he has an album coming out soon.
Fred Falke needs no introduction. His remix of SSS is just heart wrenching.

Can't Hold Back

I keep getting distracted from posting my Little Boots album review. It' the headlines on the MSN homepage, I tell you. With features like "Hot Pregnant Celeb Fashion" it's a wonder I get anything done.
Anyways, I'm so thankful for this reworking by LMR. I really wanted to drop Kano in a set, but wasn't sure how it'd mesh with electro and house. I thought it might be too disco (if that's even possible), but thanks to LMR the tempo has been sped up a bit and about two minutes cut off the overall play time. Thankyou LMR!

The New New Order

I've been wanting to make this post for a while. For the past couple of weeks I havn't been able to get enough of this band or their pragmatically titled debut album "Play Music" which is basically the best thing New Order never released. It's also a lot more.

Full of analogue synths, TR 808 beats, and sparingly used, but heavily reverberated guitars, Thieves Like Us manage to create authentic sounding early eighties pop music that comes across as genuine, as opposed to just an attempt at recreation or revival. This doesnt mean that some won't write TLU off as redundant or strictly a revivalist act, but what I think seperates TLU from such classifications are the modern arrangements and song writing showcased on the album, something which is lacking from alot of other eighties inspired acts, such as many of the artists featured on the Italians Do It Better label. I love the label, but I don't feel TLU are on the same level as far as recreating a genre exactly according to the specifications of an era. And that's a good thing.

In light of this perhaps the distinction of "the new New Order" wasn't exactly the the most accurate one to make. It really doesn't do Thieves Like Us justice, but for the purpose of comparison it'll have to suffice. When you call your band "Thieves Like Us" this sort of thing is bound to happen.

Posted below are a couple of highlights from Play Music, as well as the title track from their more recent 12" , and lastly a remix.

Thieves Like Us - Drugs In My Body

Thieves Like Us - Fass

Thieves Like Us - Really Like To See You Again

Did I mention they are also responsible for some incredible remixes?
This one is my favorite, they took the original which was a fairly typical "electro clash" (whatever that means) song and turned it into sweet, sweet disco.

Dancing Therapy

It's like this song was written for this blog. Seriously. I always wanted a theme song for my blog. Well, really I wanted to name my blog after a song. I wanted to name my blog "born to synthesize" because, well, how cool would that have been? I didn't think of it when I was signing up for my Blogger account though and ended up getting stuck with Dance Therapy. I grew to resent the name. Until now. Now it has a purpose. Now people will think I named it after an obscure italo disco cut.

H-h-h-here We Go

Should I see Telepathe when they come to Toronto later this month? Not sure. I kinda like this remix better than the original and since they won't be playing remixes live...well, I don't know.

Ugh.

My Divshare account is down. Uploads get stuck at 1%. Ugh.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrr

I don't like buzz bands. Seriously. This might seem like a strange statement coming from someone who often posts songs that have found their way onto the hype machine, but allow me to elaborate. I dont like Pheonix. I don't like Papercuts. I don't like Little Boots, Wilco, Andrew Bird, or many other of the "most blogged about" artists. Grizzly Bear are an exception. I really like the lo fi keyboard sound on this song which was completely missing from Fred Falke's remix which I heard prior to the original. The remix sounded like a bad Killers remix, so I sort of avoided Grizzly Band for even longer. Glad I finally caved.

Grizzly Bear - Two Weeks

New Knightlife

I was going to make a post on La Roux today until I noticed that the new Knightlife single made it's way to the blogging masses. One day after I posted a Cut Copy song I return to present a song by label mate Knightlife. The song itself really isn't that great, but it reminds me so much of the old MSTRKRFT song "easy love" (which still I loveto this day) that I almost feel obliged to like it. Seriously, the production and overall feel of the two songs are pretty similar to me. I hear when Knightlife came to Toronto recently he didn't get much appreciation. Shame.

Knightlife - Crusader

Far Away

One of my favorite songs over the past year was definately Cut Copy's "Far Away". I don't really listen to it that much any more, but it has earned it's place on my Ipods "Top 25 Most Played" indefinately. Seriously, the songs below it arn't even close in the play count. That being said, this is why I love remixes so much. Thanks to the Bag Raiders, I have a totally different version of Far Away to play to death. Love.

HYPEM

On my little 8 GB black Ipod Nano I have this playlist simply titled "hypem" and it's basically comprised of all the great songs I find on the "hypem". And until I actually get this blog onto the "hypem" I'm gonna keep posting songs from that playlist. Here's one of them.

More of the Same.

I know I already posted an mp3 from Lamb's Anger less than a month ago or so, but the album is so amazing. At first I didn't think so, but then that's always the sign of a great album, aint it?

I'll Never Know

I just downloaded some of the Kitsune compilations and found alot of great stuff. For some reason I had put off getting them. I guess I figured I had already heard most of the artists. Here's something I hadn't heard before.

Boss Sounds

It's time to take a step back from the blog house and remember the first dance music I really fell in love with. When I was 18 I listened almost exclusively to vintage reggae and ska for over a year. Times have changed and I've been introduced to whole new worlds of music since then, but I still really appreciate the stuff. I really do believe I appreciate it for the same reasons I appreciate disco. They really arn't that different at all if you think about it. I'd get into it more, but I'm tired.
Anyways, my friend Isaac and I might be doing a '69 reggae night sometime soon, so here are a couple of somewhat rare cuts from the era that I'm really into. The kind of stuff you can expect to here if we ever do get that night together.

Tommy McCook - Monkey Fiddle

Clancy Eccles - I Really Love You

You Say "Wazo", I Say "O-Haz-O"

Still not really sure how to pronounce his name. I heard some bro adress him as "Mr. Wazo" in an interview without any objection, but he was a bro, and "Wazo" didn't say much the whole time anyway. The French lady on his tracks always says "O-haz-o" so I'm gonna go with that. I mean, I'm no French lady, but she seems like she knows what she is talking about.
That being said, said this my favorite track from Lamb's Anger. It will either annoy you, or you will love it.

Mr. Oizo - Positif

Whaaaaaa

It's the 6th and my uploaded files on Divshare have yet to be removed. Hmmm. Want to post more mp3s, but I think I have to wait another day. Sit tight.
I say that because I've been told some people do actually read this.
It was news to me.
I think I prefer writing to noone though.
No words are wasted.

No, I Created Disco.

I think this will be my last post till May 6th.
This is because:
"You are a Free DivShare member.Your downloads renew on May 6, 2009. "
No use posting something after this as it will just be taken down in a few days.
Anyways, I've been really into Calvin Harris lately, even though that's "so 2008".
2008 was a good year (for music).
So into him that I changed my email to icreateddisco@live.ca .
I needed a new one anyway...

Farewell 150 Maplehurst

It was the end of an era last night. My girlfriend is set to move back home to Barrie after her 9 month lease has run its course. Ah, all those bottles of wine downed, neighbors enraged by electro at 4 am... the good times. All that remains are a couple of low quality cell phone pictures. And a song by Munk which I have some how related to all of this. Check it.

Preacher Keedz

Watching this video on Youtube got me thinking. What if those child preachers applied all of their religious zeal to something other than standing outside of abortion clinics? What if they were zealous about making authentic christian disco bangers instead? Would it give me something to believe in? What would it sound like? I think it would sound like Keedz:

Confusion!

I think I might actually be the only person who is both a fan of Joy Division and New Order that actually prefers the latter.
I know, I know, without Joy Division New Order couldn't exist, but I don't think with Ian Curtis at the helm Joy division would have pushed the envelope as far as New Order did.
I'm not insulting Ian Curtis, his lyrics and what he brought Joy Division are just much darker than anything the rest of the band did as New Order.
And yes, I prefer New Order's version of Ceremony too!
Anyways, this version of Confusion is my favorite. It's from Substance and the slap bass is "banging".

Breakbot

Never really paid much attention to Breakbot till tonight. After being without the internet for a week I totally binged and spent hours trying to get caught up on all the music I'd missed out on. None of this is new, but it's kind of new to me.
The Sebastian Tellier remix is kind of electro pop. I guess that's because he is, no? Isn't he the soundtrack of American Apparel? Not sure, have been too affraid to set foot in there for a while. I told myself the next time I go in I will apply and I've never gone back. I don't think I can take the rejection.
I only had a couple Yuksek mp3s on my computer prior to hearing this remix and I already like this remix better than anything I'd heard by them before.
Check it.

Sebastian Tellier - Roche (Breakbot Remix)

Yuksek - Extraball (Breakbot Remix)

Let There Be Light.

Didn't think I could last this long without the internets.
Really learned something about myself.
It was a great test of human endurance against the elements of internetless life.
Going to post an mp3 later tonight...

Two Days Left

In two days time I will be without a computer for an indefinite period of time.
Not sure what's going to happen.
I might sieze to exist.
Worse yet, noone is even reading this.
That being said, these are like the disco death froes of my dieing blog.
The ONLY thing I am not sure about (other than the whole not having a PC for a while thing) is the vocal sample in this song. It kind of irks me. But everything else is so good I can overlook it.
Anyways, on with it.

VanGuard - Reach Out (George Duke Remix)

I Make No Excuses For Posting U2.

Okay, maybe I do.
But it is a really "banging" remix.
The other track is from this group (dj?) who go by the name Capture. If you like Justice you will probably like the track.

Sweet, Sweet Disco

Here are a couple of selections from Glass Candy's Beatbox.
Generally I deteste the label of disco punk because it's most often, well, crap.
Glass Candy are an exception.
I read that they don't use any computers, just simple analog record techniques. Makes it more "authentic" I guess. Definately tagging this as "authentic disco" because of that.

Glass Candy - Rolling Down The Hills

Glass Candy - Beatific

Post Birthday Post

My birthday has come and gone. The night was basically spent getting "hammied" off of Sola Nero and listening to Aeroplane. Could've been worse.
I'm actually obsessed with Aeroplane at the moment. I know I've kind of missed the boat on this one, but I couldn't resist making a post about them. Whispers takes a while to pick up, but when it does it really does. Disco bliss.

B(side)IRTHDAY

It's my birthday.
Still in my jockeys.
Too lazy to post a birthday playlist comprised of introspective "indie rokker" songs about getting older/celebrating, so I leave you with this.

If their were bangers in jazz, I'm pretty sure they would sound like this.

Pretty Young Thang

Made a mix for the stylists and models at the Ryerson fashion show to listen to in the dressing room. Don't think they even listened to it. Maybe it's because I put a Police remix on it. Is that tacky?
